משרד הפטנטים האמריקאי העניק ל- MS פטנט חדש ב- 31.8.2004: מעבר בין 'לינקים' בעמוד Web באמצעות מקש 'טאב'. הפטנט, שמספרו
6,785,865, התבקש בשנת 1997 ועניינו ב-"
Discoverability and navigation of hyperlinks via tabs". זוהי תכונה המוטמעת במרבית הדפדפנים המודרנים ובהם מוזילה, נטסקייפ ואופרה - לצד אקספלורר של מייקרוסופט כמובן. היות והשימוש העתידי בפטנט עורר דאגה, הגיב דובר MS בדברים הבאים, שהם, לדעתנו, ביטוי מופתי לאי-אמירת דבר בעל משמעות (ובטח שלא הפגת דאגות):
"We respond to inquiries about our portfolio and typically have private
collaborative discussions with companies about using our technology.
Consistent with practice throughout our industry, we don't believe it's
constructive to identify specific products and start labelling them as
infringing or non-infringing."
