Broadband VOD Bill approved by Israeli parliament

The Knesset (Israeli parliament) approved yesterday Amendment 37 to The 1982 Communications Law which will allow broadcasters and private companies to provide Video On Demand (VOD) services through broadband infrastructure. The amendment will allow YES digital satellite television to compete with HOT, the Israeli cable television provider which at present enjoys exclusivity in the VOD services market in Israel. According to the Amendment, a new type of license is introduced to the Communication law - "Broadcast on Demand": "A cable broadcast which is transmitted in one channel or more, that are provided at the request of the subscriber [of the cable television provider – law.co.il] at any given time and which are diffused through broadband infrastructure in the same standard of broadcast and service quality as in [television – law.co.il] broadcasts".
